## Design Philosophy

SDH Studio's work is rooted in the tradition of tropical modernism — an approach Stephanie Halfen has developed since her earliest projects, which explored the dialogue between landscape and architectural form in South Florida's demanding climate. Core to the firm's work is the treatment of indoor and outdoor space not as separate conditions but as a single, continuous living environment: walls dissolve into screens, living areas extend to covered terraces, and the pool and landscape become architectural rooms in their own right.

Water is a recurring organizing element — whether as a reflecting pool at the entry that frames arrival, a lap pool that anchors the rear elevation, or a careful relationship between the house and its waterfront site. Circulation is designed as a spatial sequence rather than a functional necessity: the path from street to threshold, threshold to interior, and interior to garden is choreographed to build anticipation and reveal the house progressively.

The material palette tends toward natural materials — stone, timber, concrete — chosen for their behavior in heat and humidity as much as their appearance, and composed with a restraint that lets natural light and tropical planting do expressive work. Passive design strategies — cross-ventilation, deep overhangs, careful solar orientation — are embedded from the earliest design stages rather than added as afterthoughts.

Despite the firm's growth to a team of 38 designers and architects, Stephanie Halfen remains personally involved in every project from concept through construction administration, maintaining the depth of principal attention and continuity of vision that clients expect at the highest level of residential design.
