On the street façade, the frame does quiet, disciplined work. Dark vertical fins screen the upper-floor bedrooms, filtering strong daylight and keeping them private without closing them off. Below, the composition steps back. A garage door clad in warm timber sits beside a panel of textured stone, and between them the entry recedes into shadow, reached by a short flight of steps and a planted court where a single palm rises clean up through the opening. Wide, pale concrete pavers set into the lawn draw the approach toward the door, so arrival feels less like a driveway and more like a procession.
The rear of the house is where the design opens out. Here the frame extends into deep overhangs, their undersides lined in natural wood that carries from the interior ceilings straight through to the soffits. That continuous timber plane is the home’s defining material idea: it warms the contemporary geometry, softens the light, and makes the covered terraces read as rooms rather than thresholds. The overhangs are also practical, shading the interiors from the Florida sun and sheltering the outdoor living areas from the summer’s afternoon storms.
At ground level, the open living, dining, and kitchen spaces run the full width of the house and give onto an elevated terrace a few shallow steps above the garden. An outdoor kitchen anchors one end; a timber sun deck and the sculpted curve of the pool extend from the other, the pool’s soft edge a deliberate counterpoint to the rigor of the frame. Double-height volumes inside draw daylight deep into the plan, and the changing light across the day becomes part of the architecture.
Beyond the pool, the garden falls away toward the water, where a private dock extends the home’s reach to the very edge of the site. Mature palms and layered tropical planting wrap the house on every side, so the frame reads less as an object on its lot than as a lens on the landscape around it. On a 9,238-square-foot site, the SCH Residence shows how clarity of form and warmth of material can make a family home feel both composed and at ease.
