About

Windmill Ranches

Every principal room of the Windmill Ranches residence, a 7,973-square-foot home in Weston, Florida, turns toward a sweeping water view framed by tall palms. SDH Studio began with polished pale floors, white walls and softly striated stone, then layered in espresso wood, honey-toned millwork and black steel for contrast. Soaring walls of black-framed glass pull daylight and landscape deep inside, lending the home a resort-like ease.

The living room is double height, with clerestory glazing stacked above sliding glass walls that open to the pool terrace. Two long white leather sofas on slender steel bases face each other across a split, two-level cocktail table in dark wood, grounded by a misty blue-gray rug. Teal and blush cushions echo the water and sky, while a glass-railed bridge overhead links the upper rooms and adds a layer of drama.

At the entry, a tall espresso-wood pivot door opens onto a wall of veined stone, where black cantilevered treads float upward behind a frameless glass balustrade and slim stainless handrail. Beneath the stair, a bed of dark river stones and broad-leafed plantings introduce a motif repeated throughout the house. A dimensional black-and-white artwork hangs nearby, while clerestory windows above the door wash the stone in shifting natural light throughout the day.

Nearby, the double-height dining area features a suspended wine display, with bottles strung on fine cables to create a shimmering, sculptural screen. The kitchen pairs concrete-toned wall panels and a charcoal island with honey-toned upper cabinetry and a full-height wood wall concealing ovens and storage. Bentwood swivel stools line the island, and a river-stone inset in the floor carries the landscape theme into the most practical, everyday spaces of the home.

The primary suite is a private retreat. Corner glazing wraps the bedroom in palms and water views, with a pair of molded wood lounge chairs set beside the glass and navy bedding accented in soft pink. In the primary bath, a sculptural white freestanding tub sits before floor-to-ceiling glass facing a lush garden, alongside a walk-in shower, matte black fixtures and textured gray stone walls. A floating dark wood double vanity sits beneath a long backlit mirror. The powder room continues the mood with dark textured stone, a frosted glass partition and a floating stone vanity.

Contrast drives the house: pale stone against espresso wood, polish against texture. The stones and plantings that begin under the entry stair turn up again in the kitchen floor, keeping the garden close.
